Purchase a pint of milk, grab a "spork" and a tray of food, and learn about the pioneering work being done by Portland Public Schools Nutrition Services with regard to school food. Guests at this playful lunch and lecture will be treated to the very same cafeteria food that students at Abernethy Elementary eat. When the bell rings, they'll have 20 minutes - the time allotted in many public schools - before class starts. Guests sit family style and enjoy (inhale quickly) their cafeteria-style lunches. The format showcases both the successes and the challenges of the cafeteria lunch, and paves the way for a thought-provoking post-lunch panel discussion.

"Class" will feature a discussion hosted by Linda Colwell, Farm to School Coordinator, and Kristy Obbink, Portland Public Schools Nutrition Services Director, about the positive changes PPS has been making throughout the district. These changes include offering breakfast, all-you-can-eat salad bars in every school, and the elimination of fast-food and vending machine contracts. Guests will also be treated to an inside look at the Abernethy Elementary scratch kitchen pilot project, as results from the pilot year will be shared and discussed. Chef Ann from Berkeley, California will also share her experiences after her first year of running the Berkeley Unified School District's food service program.

Proceeds support the Garden of Wonders project at Abernethy Elementary and Ecotrust's evaluation of the scratch kitchen model.
